Team Reports 2007 / 08

First Team

The season started early and successfully for the First Team at Beacon Hill with victory at the Essex County FAs Charter Standard Club Competition. The key ingredients of togetherness, set patterns of play, determination and no little individual skill saw the team through to a notable win. And just to prove you don’t have to cheat to win they also were awarded the Fairplay Trophy. The Club’s motto “Hard But Fair” proving about right.

The League season soon punctured any over ambitious expectations. By Christmas we were adrift and our long tenancy in the Mid-Essex Premier Division looked under threat. Excuses could include suspensions, injuries, fitting in new players, adapting to new systems, too young and inexperienced but the harsh reality was that collectively we weren’t good enough.

January and early February saw a run of fixtures against the Division’s top three. Whilst no points were gained we now looked the part and a quiet confidence spread through the squad. At the business end of the season a series of wins took us to mid table comfort. Each of those victories came from a “One Win, All Win” attitude. The style of team play was emphatic with occasions of individual brilliance. When it mattered this team proved it has got what it takes.

With an average age of 23 there is no doubt that at some stage in the future this group of players will bring success to Beacon Hill Rovers FC. It will only come with the continued focus and honesty that is starting to earn the squad a deserved level of respect. We are bound to make some mistakes along the way, that’s what makes life fun. If we could predict the result there would be no point in playing the game.

Success? Will it be next season? Why not?

Reserve Team

Beacon Hill's Reserves mirrored their 1st team by starting the season with a cup final win.  The Braintree Cup Final for 2006/07 did not get played due to lack of time, so the two teams agreed to play the final during August 2007, as part of their warm up for the coming season.  In an entertaining game, Hill's reserves came out on top, with a 4-2 scoreline.

This set the standard for the season, as in the League we lost only two games - one in fairly farcical conditions in October and then again in late February.  Hill hit the top of Division 5 in December, but knew that with games in hand their nearest competitor could catch them, and so it turned out.  However it was not until April that they let go of top spot, and had to settle for a clear second spot and promotion back to Division 4 after a two year absence.

With an influx of new players, and a desire to progress there is no reason why Hill's Reserves should not be looking to at least emulate last season's successes.  Team spirit, a positive attitude and an emphasis on remaining calm and patient should see the team enjoy another successful season.  BRING IT ON !!!!

Third Team

Beacon Hill’s newly created third team enjoyed a successful first season playing in the Colchester & East Essex League. The team saw many of the U16’s playing their first ever games in adult football. With the Thirds played against new teams and new areas, being the first and only team from the club to play in that league. Next season the Thirds will move across to Mid Essex Division 5 after the reserves gained promotion out of it. They will be hoping to build on this season’s success in the Mid Essex.

Veterans Team

The Vets started season with a number of new faces and losing a number of key players through injury and due to one taking up the post of First Team Manager. Never the less they still enjoyed a strong season finishing 4th in the Essex Veterans Premier Division. To end the season the Vets enjoyed a run out at Layer Road playing against Jobserve Vets, though losing the game a great day was enjoyed by all and having the privilege of being one of the last games to be played at Layer Road.

Ladies Team

The Ladies side had a very tough season due to having a small squad and often turning out with a bare 11. Even with this difficulty the team still ended the season in very confident spirit and with the addition of some the players coming through from the U15 girls next season the squad will be further strengthened and will enjoy a more successful season.

U16’s Team

The U16’s completed their 10th and final season in youth football by winning the League Cup with a 2-0 win over Great Notley. This success was made possible by a tremendous two leg semi final victory over the league champions, Uplands Rangers. League form was inconsistent but they finished strongly on an unbeaten run of six games. The team has so far produced eight players for the adult teams, with a number of them cementing regular places. With the players coming into the adult teams next season, the club is beginning to see the benefits of putting in place youth football 10 years ago.

U15 Girls Team

The U15’s also enjoyed a fantastic season with them finishing 4th in the Essex Girls League and runners up to League winners Silver End in the Cup. Next season will see a number of the players making their first steps into our ladies team as they reach 16. With a very successful season the girls will look to build on this for next season.

U13’s Team

A good close set of matches in the B&DYFL U13, Division 3 during the 2007-2008 season. There were plenty of goals in our matches, for both teams! Score lines of 5-4, 4-3, 5-7 were not uncommon!

Beacon Hill U13’s played 25 matches using a squad of 21 players, with two players making appearances in every game, from a total number of 358 selections being made! The team finished 9th in the league, and made it into the quarter finals of the League Cup.

The players voted for Steve to be their Player of the Year after a very successful first full season with us. Brett picked up Managers player of the year, once again playing in every position he was asked to, always giving 100% to the team.

The team had great support from all their families and supporters and also from within the team itself… a strong team spirit lifting their game.

We were also pleased to be an award winner from the other teams in our league, being runners up in the Sportsmanship award.

Finally, on behalf of the team, a big thank you to everyone who helped with getting the goals out and back again, flags, The Hatch, ground repairs and all the other jobs that seem to mount up.

U9’s Team

A very difficult season with the team being very unlucky in several matches.  Positive evidence with the boys looking to play quality football especially with respect to passing, calling and positional play. The goals scored were very creative and involved a lot of team work. Roll on next season

U7’s Team

The U7’s had a very interesting first season, as did their coaches. We started with a very large squad but lost a few along the way. We have a good nucleus of keen players to continue into the U8’s. The boys are really enjoying their introduction to team football. We didn’t win many matches but that didn’t bother our lads as all they want to do is just play football. We are all looking forward to next season and here’s hoping that we, as Peter’s squad have done, can complete 10 years as a team.
