Local football club named by the FA at Wembley as the best in the country!
by Peter Mickelsen
Beacon Hill Rovers FC near Maldon in Essex has been awarded the accolade of National Charter Standard Club of 2008 by the Football Association. Earlier this year Beacon Hill Rovers FC became the Essex FA Charter Standard Club of the year and this subsequent national award is a tremendous achievement for this club. This weekend at Wembley, on the pitch before the England World cup qualifying match against Kazakhstan, Beacon Hill Rovers FC were presented with their award by Sir Trevor Brooking. The club were invited as guests of the FA for the day in recognition of their achievements, which was recorded in the official match day programme. They joined a capacity crowd of 90,000 in the stadium to see the England victory. In September three of the under ten players of Beacon Hill were invited to Wembley to parade the FA Respect banner on the pitch before the England U21 international against Portugal. They enjoyed a fantastic day out with their families, meeting players and officials and looking around Wembley on match day. Formed over 80 years ago the club has in the past decade taken on a very proactive role in the community, establishing youth football for both boys and girls whilst running senior teams for men and women, including keeping the older players in shape with veteran’s football. In recent times the club has extended its role to encompass learning disability football, in addition to building on its work in coaching in local schools. The club has been working closely with the FA on high quality player focussed coaching and was a significant contributor to an FA training DVD released last year. Chairman Steve Ewers said this award is in recognition of the significant effort and expertise of all those volunteers supporting our club who in recent years have raised the standards of coaching and support to all wanting to play football in our local community, whatever their ability. Note: Beacon Hill Rovers FC was formed in 1921 and play at the Wickham Bishops Sports Ground. They run teams in The Mid Essex League, The Essex County Ladies Alliance, Essex County Girls Alliance, Essex Veteran’s League, The Blackwater and Dengie Youth League and hope soon to be founder members of a potential new Essex Disability Football League. Coaches are FA qualified to levels 1,2 and 3. There are 3700 FA Charter Standard Clubs in England For further information contact Peter Mickelsen, Community Coach on 01621 893025 or e mail pcmickelsen@aol.com
