Schools out at Beacon Hill
by Parky
Recently Beacon Hill Rovers F.C. hosted two Essex County Schools F.A. Under-11 competitions – the Malcolm Moffatt Trophy (boys) and Cup (girls). Not long ago awarded the prestigious F.A. National Charter Standard Community Club status, Beacon Hill continued to support grass roots football in the community, holding the event for the second successive year; the club also supplied a number of players from their own Under-11 side. Twenty teams from across the region competed in the two 7-a-side tournaments for the Outer Essex Section title and for the chance to go on and represent the county in the English Schools F.A. Regional Finals. Local teams such as Howbridge Junior in Witham, had the chance to play against schools from further afield, including Woodside Primary from Thurrock and Mildene Primary in Colchester. The footballing skills on show were very impressive and teamwork was particularly noticeable as players showed how they could pass and move with ease. After forty five matches played throughout the afternoon, Stanford-le-hope Primary and Hereward Primary boys' teams, and Felsted Primary and Woodside girls' sides, will now go to the Arsenal Dome in February and face the top two teams from the Essex London Boroughs Section. The atmosphere at the event, made by over three hundred pupils, coaches, officials and supporters, was superb and made for the model of a competitive, yet fun afternoon. Matches were played true to the spirit of the game, teams mingled and such was the keenness of the competitors that 'unofficial' games were being played on every spare patch of grass. Excellent organisation by the Essex County Schools F.A., and work by match officials and Beacon Hill Rovers alike provided for a day of sport at its best.
