2009/10 Essex Soccability League and BHRFC
by Peter Mickelsen
Saturday 31st October was the first league fixture day and players coached by Beacon Hill Rovers were involved in no less than eight of the fourteen teams competing! Beacon Hill Rovers do some coaching in Colchester but work mainly locally on BHR Soccability with our adopted Witham team training at the Bramston astro on Wednesday evenings. From our Witham based squad, for this weekend’s fixtures, we provided the players for the majority of the Chelmsford team and some of the Clacton team! Witham based players taking part at the weekend were James, Nick, Nigel, Dean, Adam, Len, Rob, Adam, Lawrie, Sam, Mikey, Matt and Rodney. Teams from all over the county took part. The league has been established for this first season with two divisions, a premiership and a championship each consisting of seven teams playing 5 a side matches. Results were unpredictable with the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition an unknown quantity. Our Witham and Chelmsford teams won three, drew one and lost eight. Top scorer was Dean with three, Sam, Adam and Nick also got on the score sheet with one each. We also hit the woodwork on a number of occasions, made plenty of chances and tended to play better against the better teams! Both our keepers Len and Nigel had good days keeping the scores respectable. It was an enjoyable start to the league programme and has given us some good pointers for areas to work on in our coaching sessions on Wednesdays. The next league day is eagerly awaited! The next fixtures will be held at Shrub End, Colchester on Saturday November 28th Kick Off 1pm.
